The Poltava is an ancient Ukrainian breed of dual-purpose chickens named after the Poltava region of Ukraine. The bird was developed by crossing local birds with Orpingtons and other breeds such as the New Hampshire and Wyandotte.
Poltava chicken Characteristics
Poltava chickens are fast-growing medium to large-sized birds with a horizontal posture and bright yellow legs. They have a pink-type crest, red earlobes, and include three color varieties: clay, cuckoo, and black.
Chickens have a weight of approximately 2.2 kg to 2.5 kg, while roosters can weigh from 3.0 kg to 3.50 kg.
Varieties of colors
In the beginning, the breed appeared in three color varieties; Clay, cuckoo, and black. Unfortunately, the cuckoo and black varieties are almost extinct, but plans for their restoration are underway. The clay variety is presumed to have remained in the Poltava province since the mid-19th century. It is also the standardized color variety for the Poltava today.
Poltava breed temperament
A bird with a calm temperament, which adapts very well to the various climatic conditions of its homeland. This breed is in great demand among the Ukrainian population. Due to its high productivity combined with its resistance to common diseases and docile temperament with its breeders.
Not only that, but they are also very easy to breed, adapting to both the open field and confinement, and will usually go in search of their own food. These birds have a calm nature, and therefore you will never see them fighting each other.
Poltava egg production
Chickens are regular brown egg producers (about 180 eggs per year) and tend to hatch them. These dual-purpose birds also make excellent table birds, prized for their exquisite flavor. Their eggs weigh approximately 56 g each, and their shell is cream-colored.

Poltava breed development
The breed was developed by crossing local chickens with Orpington, New Hampshire, Wyandotte, and a few other breeds in the mid-1800s. The first appearance of the Poltava breed was in 1895 at the Agricultural Exhibition in Poltava. The breed was officially registered in 1920.
In 1949, the Poltava clay varieties were imported to the Ukrainian research station on poultry farming (now the Bird Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences), where since 1951 in-depth selection work has been carried out with this bird. to increase the productive and reproductive qualities. In 1985, in the former Soviet Union, according to official figures, more than 700 thousand chickens of the Poltava breed were registered.
Later, a more intensive selection was made to improve the Poltava breed including its three varieties (clay, cuckoo, and black), through the support of the government with a special decree of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ukraine to extend and preserve the breed. It is presumed that the clay variety has been maintained in the Poltava province since the mid-19th century.
