A Guide to Odorless Pig Farming (Babuyang Walang Amoy)

Although it is an innovative technology, natural pig rearing or better known as odorless pig farming or piggery in the Philippines is gradually gaining recognition. More and more pig farmers even though they are new or old in this field are starting to practice this method of caring for healthy pigs.

Many of the caregivers have already set up their odorless pigs in their yards using equipment only available around them. On the other hand, there are pig farmers who have made their conventional piggeries odorless to make their livelihood more economical.

But remember, an odorless pig is not just about having a pig pen that doesn’t stink.

Although it is easier to notice the odorlessness of a pig using natural pig husbandry, the benefit of such technology is not just limited to the odorlessness of your pets ’cage that is often noticeable in a conventional piggery. Because natural pig farming is focused on keeping your pet pig’s habitat and food natural, pets become happier and pigs become less sick. This technology is easier to implement and cheaper for ranchers.

Odorless piggery construction

Before you start building your natural pigsty, you should first consider a few factors.

Your pigsty should be built in an area that is exposed to enough sunlight because it acts as a natural disinfectant and it provides vitamin D to your pets.

You should also keep in mind that the area you choose has enough airflow so that your pet pigs do not mistress.

Avoid building in a low-lying area as it is more likely to be flooded during the rainy season.

Remember that the ground should be at the highest point under the floor of your pigsty if there is a flood.

You also choose the place near the road to make your tasks easier.

It will be easier to bring feed and sell pork to the market if you are close to the road, farm-to-market roads, so to speak.

Odorless piggery floor plan

A natural pigsty that does not stink should have the following:

Bedding or floor coverings such as chaff, swamps where pigs can bathe and eat.

Experts recommend 1.5 to 2 square meters in size for the floor with bedding.

The bog should be one square meter in size.

The diner should be placed in front of the swamp. It should be only about an inch in size, just right so they don’t bed what they eat.

In an ordinary odorless pig, it will take 25 square meters of the total size you need.

Materials to use in odorless piggery

If you are looking for materials for your pigsty, you can use whatever materials you can get in your area.

But remember that the equipment you will use must be sturdy so that you can be sure that it will be able to protect the pigs inside the pigsty.

Often, the pig we are talking about is a mixture of concrete, wood or bamboo, and nipa or galvanized iron.

You can use any material you can get, as long as you make sure it doesn’t hurt your pets.

You can choose shed type, semi-monitor type, or monitor type when it comes to roof design, as long as you make sure there is adequate ventilation for your pets.

For bedding, ipa or rice hull is recommended. You can use other organic materials for bedding.

Your bedding should be about two to three feet deep and lay on the ground. Concrete floor bedding is not required.

The bog should be one meter in size. It should be only shallow with the ability to dissolve anima water that is only inches deep.

Pigs use it to cool off when the weather is hot. Here they also defecate or urinate.

Odorless pig care

Proper maintenance of an odorless pig at the right time is beneficial not only because it can control bad odor but it can keep your pet pigs peaceful and happy.

Dirt needs to be picked up regularly by sweeping the bog or getting it on the bedding.

Pig manure can be stored and used as manure in the soil.

The depth of the bedding should also be maintained. Over time, the bedding sags due to the weight of the pigs or wetness, so new bedding needs to be added periodically.

Once the pigs are sold, all the bedding must be removed and replaced with new ones before the next batch of pigs is confined.

The swamp in which they bathe should be watered six inches deep every morning and dehydrated every afternoon.

Keeping it in its water overnight is not recommended as it can make the pig bed too cold.

Feed for odorless piggery

It is also important that pigs are fed organic pig feed, which can be made at home or purchased at agricultural supplies stores because it does not contain any antibiotics or harmful hormones.

The problems often experienced by pig farmers such as smelly piglets and low incomes are often because they do not use natural or organic feeds.

It is also important to choose the feeds you buy for pet pigs.

There are feeds that contain probiotics that help them have good digestion thus improving the health of your pets.

Probiotics are also called good bacteria that fight the bad bacteria inside the pig’s stomach.

Because probiotics are organisms, pigs reach a size that is usually only reached if you use artificial feeds and antibiotics.
